WE ARE NOW ON COUNT DOWN TO
GARDENING DAY!
Here is the Timeline
- Westminster council has said it will take eight weeks to process the application. With Christmas involved this will probably take us to the end of February. (Stanhope are generously paying legal and application fees for the planning application.)
- Once planning approval has been granted, Stanhope will send in Mc Gee, the contractors, to prepare the site – installing fencing, porterloo’s, watering points etc. (Stanhope are also paying for these costs)
- While the infrastructure is being prepared Stanhope will set up a room (venue to be decided, but in the vicinity) where plot holders will go and sign a licence with Stanhope. Having done this they will be given a membership card which will allow them access to enter and garden on the site.
- Upon completion of site preparations, and the signing of the licences, we will be allowed on to the site to begin gardening. This date will be, if all goes to plan:
~1st MARCH 2010~
~ALLOTMENT FACTS~
Allotments began due to the war effort in the late 1940’s. During the war time dig there were 1.4 million allotments. Even in the late 1970’s there were almost 500,000.
As recession bites, the growing enthusiasm for homegrown veg has seen more than 100,000 people join waiting lists for a patch of land as demand hits an all-time high.
In north London, the allotment waiting list in Camden has stretched to 40 years and in parts of Haringey the lists are so long that they’ve been closed.
In Lewisham in south London there are waiting lists of more than six years for some allotments.
In Brighton too waiting lists have been shut until further notice.
Almost 6 million people want to rent an allotment but only 206,000 plots across the UK.

~INTRODUCING ~
YOUR VERY OWN SHARED COMMUNITY BIKE!
For those who love Groho and have got your plot allocations: this is the fabulous community bike that has been very kindly donated by the best bicycle shop in London: VELORUTION. You will all be able to use it to help you push your plants/ tools / prize vegetables around the site. Pretty good hey? We hope you like it.
~WHAT WE STILL NEED – CAN YOU HELP?~
- Some sets of tools/ watering cans for community use (for those who don’t have their own)
- A shed to store tools
- A bigger shed in which to make a cup of tea and sit on a rainy day.
- Benches, or other things to sit on.
Part of the excitement of this project is that it has been achieved entirely by people power. There has been no need for grants or handouts. We, the community, have just made things happen.
So if anyone can donate or knows someone who can provide of any of the above it would be fantastic.
