What a week we’ve had at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery.

Not one, or even two, but three private views this week!

Rebecca flew to New York for Andew Taylor’s private view on Monday, caught a plane, first thing the next day and got back in time for David Whitaker’s opening night, then off for a NADFAS lecture on Wednesday, before making it back to attend Ken Butler’s private view!!

And there was re-organising Rebecca Jewell’s show in between all that!

Phew!

All shows have started brilliantly and all received an excited bunch of visitors, friends and family.

Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery continues to take the world by storm.

If David Whitaker’s private view wasn’t enough, we had the splendid new works by the lovely Ken Butler on show this Thursday night. Ken was reportedly anxious – Would people come? Would people be interested in his work? Ken had no reason to be worried – Charlotte street became packed, works flew off the walls and everyone was full of nothing but compliments!

Ken’s brilliant new show runs until the 24 December – make sure you don’t miss out on his charming pastel works.

David Whitaker’s breathtaking retrospective opened this Tuesday 6 December and was superbly attended. Everyone who came were captivated by David’s mind boggling colourful optical artworks. He truly was a master of his craft.

The show became busy right from the start with people eager to see our extensive collection of David’s work charting his career.

Another fantastic private view at Conway street – make sure you come and see this unforgettable show. It will firmly leave a lasting, awe inspiring impression upon you!

Andrew’s exhibition runs until I January – don’t miss out!

Birds Becoming Artefacts explores how birds have been used by cultures from all over the world to enhance the beauty and wisdom of humans. The title of the show reflects on the dual meaning of the word ‘becoming’ – how birds are ‘turned into’ artefacts and how birds ‘make artefacts beautiful’. For example, in Papua New Guinea, the Highlanders wear the bird of paradise feathers to attain the beautiful qualities of the bird. In Jewell’s artistic world, the wearer of Lear’s Headdress would acquire Edward Lear’s wit and artistic talent and the beauty and wisdom of the parrots he painted; and the wearer of Owl Cape would absorb the wisdom of the owl.

Rebecca has perfected a technique for printing images directly onto feathers, and she has made these into new artefacts inspired by the British Museum Pacific collections. The show display prints, wall-paper, artefacts and cabinets of gilded labels and feathers. Rebecca’s artwork, Lear’s Headdress has been shortlisted for the 2011 Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize in Australia.

Birds Becoming Artefacts opened last night at Conway Street to a fantastically busy reception. Upstairs the amount of people mimicked the quantity of work on display – and what a display! 100 beautiful works by the incredible Rebecca Jewell.

Matthew Sturgis and black dog publishing have put together a brilliant new book celebrating the life and expansive career of David Whitaker.

David (1938-2007) was an abstract painter fascinated by the optical effects of colour. Over the course of a career that spanned five decades, he pursued this fascination with inspired commitment, producing a wonderfully rich and substantial oeuvre.

The David Whitaker Painting book charts the course of his artistic development, with examples of all phases of his work. The text, written by Matthew Sturgis, combines a full account of Whitaker’s career, contemporary critical appraisals, an illuminating fragment of autobiographical memoir, as well as useful chronology.

David Whitaker Painting is an essential read.

Have we got a treat in store for you this weekend – Saturday 26 November & Sunday 27 November.

Not only have we got the artwork of Jean Sturgis and her exhibition, Places, on show downstairs at Conway street, but also the two floors above are covered in a beautiful array of Rebecca Jewell’s work – her latest offering entitled, Birds Becoming Artefacts.

On Saturday 26, we are open at our usual times, 10 – 6pm and our bonus Sunday 27 opens at 12 – 6pm.

So, if you can’t make Saturday, then come on our special Sunday…or come both days – the works truly merits a 2nd, 3rd, even 4th look!

And remember, Rebecca’s private view takes place Wednesday 23 November 6.30 – 8.30pm.
